Mother tongue

Way back then
When we were children
Mothers had no tongue.

Young daughters-in-law
In joint families were
More like mute puppets.

They could find
Their voice years later
Or if the family happened
To go nuclear.

But by then, one was
Already in school,
Grappling with the algebra
Of the three-languages formula,

All alien
From the three
One first saw
Mother speaking in –
Cautious susurration
From behind the veil,
Silence and tears.
