Grief

I watch an orange beetle, orange as lipstick,
smooth powdered wings, slick navy-tipped beetle,
on the green lime leaf; butterflies,
painted lady, tiger and anonymous tiny lemon-yellow,
swing daintily on delicate long-stemmed wildflowers
growing profusely on the roof next door,
rusted red by the monsoon rain,
bowed down by the weight of butterflies,
and I, by the concentrate of grief,
and this aimless suffering.
Far away in a water-hyacinth-choked pond,
a motionless flock of long-legged herons,
like long white buds arise, a living bouquet,
and in a time of sleep come overwhelmingly to me,
a sense of loss, of sadness, of too many years,
passing too swiftly, the vividness of flame-coloured
nasturtiums burns brightly,
seasons dawn, orderly and riotous in turn
but the logical conclusion of a woman’s life passes me by.
